Rauchs formelhafte Bildzeichen suggerieren eine tiefergehende Bedeutung, doch es fällt schwer, ihre Botschaft zu entziffern. Die Spannung, die unter der fast eingefrorenen Oberfläche lauert, lebt von ParadoxienSo bewegt der Bildaufbau sich darstellt, so starr ist der Eindruck; so gebrochen die Farben eigentlich sind, so kräftig wirken sie doch. Neo Rauch erhält im Jahr 2002 in Maastricht "The Vincent", den Vincent van Gogh Bi-annual Award for Contemporary Art, anlässlich dessen Verleihung diese Publikation erscheint. He is one of the most original artists of his generation. His paintings appear disturbingly detached and familiar, for their figures, objects and mood seem to come from old advertising posters, dusty book covers or forgotten comics. In 2002, Neo Rauch received the Vincent Van Gogh Award for Contemporary Art, in Maastricht, and this publication marks the occasion of this award and forms the first comprehensive presentation of the artist's oeuvre, with 65 works from 1993 to 2002.
