DJ has some wear. Jakes Sands retires from his danger-filled life after his family is murdered, but he discovers a body while jogging and begins an investigation, leading to more corpses and deadly confrontations. A first novel. Ronald Pierce Ely (June 21, 1938 – September 29, 2024) was an American actor and novelist, best known for portraying Tarzan in the 1966–1968 NBC series Tarzan and playing the lead role in the film Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (1975). He hosted the Miss America pageant telecast in 1980 and 1981. During the filming of Tarzan, Ely did almost all of his own stunts, [2] and received over two dozen injuries, including two broken shoulders and several lion bites. He wrote two mystery novels featuring private investigator Jake Sands: Night Shadows (1994) and East Beach (1995). On October 15, 2019, Ely's son Cameron, then 30 years old, stabbed Valerie Ely to death at the family's home in Hope Ranch. Police officers killed Cameron Ely, claiming he posed a threat to officers. TV Tarzan Ely's first novel pits Jake Sands—a Travis McGee wannabe with the habits (jogging, weight training, sensitivity) of a Santa Barbara Spenser—against whoever killed his Coco Palms neighbor Wendell Leeds; Katherine Burley's missing husband, Greg; and Toni Spence, the woman Greg called just before he disappeared. To find the connection among the deaths, Jake—assisted by crippled restaurateur Jason Meddler and omnivorous, laid-back sheriff's investigator Tex Flanagan—will have to sit through a meeting of the Coco Palms Homeowners' Association, bring up a coded book from an undersea cave, and nose out the links between high-stepping Texas politico David Lee Garrison and departed gang lord Sam Giancana. If this doesn't sound like enough action, a high-mortality finale features jujitsu, zenkutsu-dachi, and some primo shooting. Solid entertainment. Derived from Library Journal: Ely of Tarzan fame offers a sturdy, tough but sensitive protagonist in a successful first novel. Jake Sands, still in his forties but wealthy and retired from his job as a recovery agent, lives in an exclusive area of Santa Barbara. A private investigator in all but name, Jake agrees to locate a beautiful woman's missing husband. His search quickly uncovers links to suspicious death and certain murder. Initial prose gives way to pleasant modulation, just as Jake's attitude softens a bit. Worth reading.
