Nowadays, its significance has reached clinical applications. The clinical significance of nitric oxide encompasses: application of NO-donors such as nitroglycerin and other organic nitrates or sydnonimines in cardiovascular diseases; exploitation of stimulation of nitrergic nerves in bronchial asthma or treatment of male impotence; resuscitation of fading endothelial function in diabetes or atherosclerosis by using drugs which stimulate vascular endothelium; protection of vascular or cardiac transplants from rejection; regulation of renal function; management of septic shock patients; and many other applications.
