This is a great book. It starts getting pretty suspenseful right about halfway through, and it keeps on building up. It also has a surprise twist at the end, but I won't tell you about that. A man that has been away for years comes back to his mountain town and cabin, only to find that the mysterious Black Elk is poaching away all of the animals. His mountain friend gives him a dog, whom he names Smoky. Though reluctant at first, he gets a job as a game warden, and sets out to find Black Elk with Smoky. Jim Kjelgaard is a great author. There are lots of little details tucked in here and there that make the story vivid without being boring. There are no swear words or anything like that.
