Part memoir and part analysis of orphanhood in literature and life, full of memorable and haunting phrases, this book leaves me wanting to read more of Eileen Simpson's work. The experiences and emotions she describes, like photographs from a vanished era, are poignant and vivid. I especially found fascinating the little glimpses of that lost era tucked here and there in her story - her grandmother in high heels and pearls, chin veil and furs; her uncle driving a Packard with a figure of Mercury on the hood; a photograph of a family member who looked like Adolph Menjou; listening to the radio. All are as vivid to me as the sparkling objects she describes in her grandmother's curio cabinet. Her collections of essays on the state of orphanhood are thought-provoking, and have a special resonance because of her own experiences. It is poignant, tragic, hopeful, and real - a very special read. This book is very hard to describe, but very easy to enjoy.
