Beautifully written. Set in post WWII England, it follows varied and interesting characters of several generations. Themes include forgiveness, healing, choosing a greater happiness than that of the moment, and freedom in giving. High points: a grandmother who is always right, an artist who sees the beauty that will come with maturity, a secret room, traveling actors with bathtubs to trade, a near-sighted uncle who notices more than anyone guesses, a nanny willing to explore the woods, a house that welcomes guests with a personality of its own, and twins whose exploits keep the family alert.
