One page of adverts to the rear. An early volume of poetry by Robert Southey. Containing 'To Mary Wollstonecraft', 'The Triumph of Woman', 'Poems on the Slave-Trade', 'To the Genius of Africa', 'Sappho', 'The Pauper's Funeral', 'Hymn to the Penates', and much more. Southey was a Romantic poet, and was one of the Lake Poets alongside William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He was also the Poet Laureate for thirty years, from 1813 to 1843. Southey was a prolific writer of poetry, letters, and essays, and was also a talented biographer, writing biographies of Oliver Cromwell, Horatio Nelson, William Cowper, John Bunyan, and John Wesley. Arguably his most important contribution to literary history of the classic children's tale 'The Story of the Three Bears', the original story of Goldilocks, which was published in his prose collection 'The Doctor'. In a rebacked calf binding, with a renewed front endpaper. Externally, generally smart, a little rubbed. Minor bumping to the extremities. A few light marks to the boards. Repair to the rear board. Hinges are restored. Bookplate and booksellers label to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean, with a few scattered spots. Repair to the head of the title page, an ink inscription excised. Closed tear to page 101/102. Very Good.
