Nick Corey is another gem of a character created by Jim Thompson. He's also one of the smartest dumb guys ever to grace the pages of a book. Nick is the sheriff of a little podunk town in the middle of nowhere. All Nick wants is to eat, sleep, have some foolin' around time with some of the local ladies, and to remain sheriff. The world keeps trying to interfere with Nick's plans, though, and he has to think and adapt quickly to the problems thrown at him. Nick appears to be a slow-witted ole country boy, but he's about the last person I'd want to come up against.
