Phase Relation between Voltage and Current in Capacity Circuits.--If the voltage applied to the condenser in Fig. 244 be represented by curve E then the charge, which is proportional to the voltage, is represented by the curve Q; the condenser is Fig. 244.--Phase relation between the voltage and current in a capacity. charged alternately in opposite directions, thus between the instants m and n the plate a is positive while between n and p the plate a is negative. At the instants q and r the charge in the condenser is not changing, the currents in the leads x and y must therefore be zero. Between m and q the voltage and the charge are increasing and current flows in the positive direction, from the positive to the negative terminal as shown in diagram A, until, at the instant q, the charge is complete and the current has become zero; this gives the part fq of the current curve, see diagram C.
