That it was used only as a means to an end is plainly shown by the fact that it was considered as a duty, to the fulfilment of which people could be brought by force, through the menaces of secular or ecclesiastical power; as a duty which ceases when deception is useful; as a duty from which grown-up persons feel free towards children, and the learned towards the unlearned. We know how at last it came to this, that the majority of those who discovered the systematic fraud determined to imitate it, and unhesitatingly to profess that which appeared to them to be foolish and contrary to reason, and, if necessary, to affirm it by oath. But there were some who found it impossible to follow such a course. They did not deny that it may often be useful to minors to be deceived; but they could not help asking themselves whether it be good for minors to remain in their infancy, whether it be good for them to be kept in their ignorance, through special arrangements for that purpose; and especially if this be the case when this ignorance concerns no one and nothing but their own and innermost selves. They convinced themselves that by deceiving others they deceived themselves, that veracity is not a means to false ends; that the love of truth, that the harmony of man with himself, requires no outward stay; but that, on the contrary, it is one of those foundations of life on which the whole life of phenomena rests. They regained the consciousness of their true selves; they made a vow to break with the old hypocrisy, and remained true to their vow.
