"Revelry" is a provocative and daring political novel that captures the decadence and corruption of Washington, D.C. during the 1920s. Set against the vibrant backdrop of the Jazz Age, the story follows Willis Markham, a well-meaning but easily manipulated President of the United States, and his inner circle of advisors known as the "poker cabinet." These men, bound by camaraderie and greed, use their proximity to power to orchestrate illicit deals, leading to one of the most significant scandals in American history. A gripping roman ??? clef based on the events surrounding the Warren G. Harding administration and the Teapot Dome affair, the work serves as a sharp critique of the moral vacuum at the heart of national leadership. Samuel Hopkins Adams masterfully explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the loss of public trust. Through cynical wit and high-stakes drama, "Revelry" exposes the machinery of political life and the clash between private interests and public duty. As a significant work of early 20th-century social commentary, it remains a powerful exploration of the fragility of democratic institutions and the enduring lure of corruption. If a reader is aware of events in the Harding administration, this novel would be of special interest. Although the work is fiction, and should be so considered, it mentions characters that are easily identified with the period. A darker side was the idea that the President committed suicide which stayed in the public mind after the historical Harding's strange death.
