River Rising holds a mirror up to the soul of a nation, forcing us to look at the dark truth of our past. Told in a beautifully descriptive and visual style, this gripping epic chronicles the fate of William Drummond and his family on an incredible odyssey during the forced removal of the Cherokees from their beloved homeland in 1838-39. Layer by layer River Rising peels back the superficial fabrications that Americans have been spoon fed from our youth about this country's history and its so-called heroes. It is, of course, impractical at this stage to restore a continent to its original inhabitants -- or to their descendants. It is impossible to resurrect the victims of a genocide perpetrated in the name of civilization -- indeed, in the very name of God. But we can confront the skeletons in our national closet and examine them honestly, for only by embracing these truths can a collective healing and forgiveness begin to take place.Woven throughout this unforgettable tale of tragedy and tribulation you will discover the humor and the passion, the love and the hatred, the strengths and weaknesses of a noble people. River Rising will penetrate to the core of your being if there is a shred of humanity within you. From the remarkable transformation of the self-absorbed, anti-Indian debutante, Susanna Drummond, who ultimately becomes 'U-ni-tsi Wa-ya' (mother wolf), to the amazing courage of her brother, Michael, forced to execute his best friend -- and the brother of the woman he loves...you will be drawn into a riveting story that will stay with you through the years.

I purchased this book from Frank Stewart's website and at the time received an email from him asking us to let him know what we thought of his book. I emailed him last night to do just that, even though I've not finished the book nor has my husband even started it. It just moves me to the core that I had to let him know NOW how I feel. Frank is such a warm human being - though we've obviously never met - and he immediately replied to my email. I recommend this book to everyone and to watch for his sequel "Shadow of the Raven".
I cannot say enough about River Rising and nothing better to say then exactly what I said to Frank in my email last night:
"Just wanted to give you an update on River Rising. First, let me tell you me and my husband both have lots and lots of books. However, I finally had to put all mine that have been sitting on the shelves to the side as I could wait no longer to start River Rising!
I'm just past the 250 page mark but I must tell you now how fantastic your book is! For anyone who already is familiar with the atrocities the Tsalagi faced, reading your book is an emotional rollercoaster. I find myself smiling, tearing up, hurting deep in my heart and getting VERY angry. For the many who have no idea what our relatives went through, it should very much be an eye-opener - if they are willing to really listen and hear your words and realize that this IS THE TRUTH!
Wado for a most wonderful book! And please keep me posted when your sequel will be published, but please don't share too much about it yet seeing as I've not gotten that far."
This is a MUST READ for ALL people to learn the truth on what was done to The First Peoples!

great book
This is a wonderful book. I have read a lot on the Cherokees, but found even more information here. I checked some of the history in the book against what's on the web and found it very accurate.
