I took off a star because of Rod's adolescent humor. It adds extra pages and cartoons to a volume whose covers are already very far apart.
That aside, Rod is authoritative and he does something almost no other flying book author does. He writes with empathy. He goes to considerable trouble to explain things clearly, with friendly, thoughtful language. Where the FAA's "Airplane Flying Handbook" is pathologically dry and poorly written, this book is pleasant to read and, in my opinion, far more informative in the long run.
I bought this volume to help with Charts, Weather, and Airspace. I haven't found any tutorial that approaches this one on these chapters. His explanation on airspace is worth the price.
One more comment. I had bought the (mostly black and white) first edition then spent the extra bucks for the 2nd edition just for the color. It is, indeed, completely colored. This made a big difference to me for the chapters I was focused on.
If I could buy only one of these kinds of books, this would be the one.
