All of the source recordings were made in the mid- to late '80s, so they capture Fischer-Dieskau well past his vocal prime, absent the beauty and lyricism that characterized his best work. Also, the fifth volume is devoted to Debussy -- an inconsistent choice given that he is the only non-Germanic composer in the lineup (and more appropriately thought of as a Modernist anyway), and an unfortunate choice given that Fischer-Dieskau's grasp of French language and style is only passable. Nevertheless, Romantic Songs has recommendable qualities, not least of which is an entire disc devoted to the songs of Carl Maria von Weber, recordings of which are scant, and not often of high quality.
