D. R. Gent author of "Rugby Football" can be considered an expert of the topic of rugby for two reasons. The first is that he was a member of the Gloucester Rugby Club from 1903 to 1910. The second is his deep personal interest in the sport which becomes very apparent in this book. His main goal in writing this book is share this incredible passion and hopefully inspire others, "My object in writing this book has been to help people either to play Rugby or to appreciate it." His goal of bringing rugby to the masses is evident in the multitude of topics he covers in the text. He also was very concerned with the lack of knowledge the general public had about the game. "Keenness for a game is certainly the prime requisite, but the greater the knowledge that is possessed, the better for the game." As a result, Gent made sure to cover as much about rugby as possible to both alleviate ignorance and to increase interest. "For that reason, I hope that what I have written may conduce to a fuller enjoyment of Rugby by everybody who may happen to read it; and if it leads to a little less applause on the part of the spectators sometimes, for what is rank bad football, I shall feel not a little rewarded." Gent's passion for the sport permeates the pages of this book. An interesting read for anyone who wants to explore rugby as a sport but also that aspect of British culture.
