What a wonderful book! At last, Schubert the man appears through the almost impenetrable fog generated by countless other biographers. Dr Marek is no slouch however on the detail and the interpretation of the Masters work. Indeed his passion for detail rivals Jan Morris, and the effect is the same. The insertion of so much "homely detail" makes for a fascinating read. So many of the myths about this man, surely the greatest of all composers for the voice and, many would argue, of the Symphonic form, are taken apart, surgically, but entertainingly also. He was not the permanently destitute lonely figure, deserted by his father, indifferent to women and given to endless periods of introspection and solitude. Neither did he anticipate his own death with anything like the gloomy romanticism that so many authors have suggested. This is a truly remarkable piece of research, beautifully crafted. It is a symphony in itself, a model of the biographical form. He would, surely, have approved.
