A great book! Its author has comprehensively written an overview of the 1920's in a flowing, easy to read style for anyone interested in this era of American history. Because Allen personally experienced this time and wrote his overview so closely thereafter, he brings facts that are often ignored by other historians. For those people who have not lived through these Depression years, it is a good read to understand what occurred. I heartily recommend it.

I remember most of it!
Tis is an excellent summary of living conditions in the United States between the stock market crash of 1929 and the outbreak of World War II. It is not dusty ancient history - it was real living history. I was in it, I know. There were hard times aplenty. The lucky ones survived. This book has it all.
I just wish (at my age) that this book existed in large print! The paperback edition has a combination of long paragraphs and small print that slowed me down.
