Inscribed by Benchley to his editor at Harper & Row, and close friend Charlotte Zolotow in a facsimile of Snip's (a dog, and the protagonist of this kid's book) handwriting: "For Charlotte With Love Anyway. Snip." Benchley and Zolotow were particularly close. Seldom found Inscribed by Snip. Nathaniel Benchley was a *New Yorker* writer, the son of humorist Robert Benchley, and the father of Peter Benchley (the author of *Jaws*), a well as himself being the author of *The Off-Islanders*, the basis for the movie *The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming! * Zolotow started in publishing as Ursula Nordstrom's stenographer, and with Nordstrom's encouragement became a prolific and award-winning author of over 65 books. Zolotow was an editor and publisher at Harper's celebrated children's books department. She is credited for her contributions to the Children's Liberation Movement which espoused that the rights and emotional concerns of children be recognized and treated as the equal of adults.
