First, let me say that I'm am writing this review based on an ARC from the author.
Thea Harrison is a true storyteller, which is why I am a long-time Thea Harrison reader (back to her Amanda Carpenter days). Her ability to consistently write unique and unusual twists and plots keeps me guessing and entranced. She is also not afraid to put her characters through an emotional wringer and even give them specific personal challenges that make their journey in the novel even more difficult. And she seamlessly weaves all of these into a coherent and thrilling story. All of these elements work together to transform her novels.
Spellbinder is another magical tale that does all of this and adds a fantastic spin on Arthurian legend. This is the second book in the Moonshadow Trilogy, a spin-off of her Elder Races series. The hero is Morgan le Fae, a character that popped up in earlier Elder Series novels/novellas as a villain and who was an important figure in Moonshadow (Book 1 of the trilogy). Here, we find out how he has come to serve the truly evil Queen Isabeau of the Light Court. She and Mordred are so deliciously bad in such normal ways - they haven't been cursed or have a half-demon soul, etc. They just are BAD and use their gifts and power to indulge their twistedness.
Sidonie, the heroine, is another original character with her own issues - and these problems are heightened by the situation she finds herself in when she is kidnapped and brought to Avalon. But Sidonie is so strong - nothing keeps her down for long, and she's a smart character who adapts and takes control in order to turn the tables on her captors. She's not going to give in without a fight.
At times, this book had me in tears as these characters navigated their difficult situations. I found Sidonie and Morgan so compelling as individuals - unique characters with backstories that added obstacles that worked beautifully with their current conflicts (as individuals and as a couple). The growing love between them was so real and touching that it enhanced the sexual tension and heat. Not only is this a sexy book, but it truly is a romance. We never forget or doubt that we are reading a romance and not a book that has sex. We get into these character's souls and see/feel what's driving them. And Thea avoids writing the expected, obvious plot twist or conflict that keeps the H/H apart. She provides them with challenges that help them grow and overcome the problems that have kept them imprisoned (figuratively and literally). She takes us on this journey in ways that delight through the unexpected but never the incredulous.
I highly recommend this book - I would never have believed it, but it is even better than Moonshadow (and that was a really great book and strong start to this Elder Races spin off).
