Although Stokowski's lengthy conducting career had another eight years to go -- 1969 marked his 60th year on the podium -- this would prove to be his final all-Russian program, and it is a remarkably ambitious one given that he was closing in on his 90th year, information that Stokowski scrupulously kept to himself through lying about his age. Even at 87, Stokowski was not lacking in energy; if anything, it is the Royal Philharmonic that is struggling to keep up with him ; just listen to how the tempo in Glinka's Kamarinskaya breathlessly races at a pace far beyond the norm, though it is admittedly exciting.
