S. J. Rozan's books have deservedly won many awards. Why she isn't as well known as is a mystery to me. Her books star the detective partners, Bill Smith and Lydia Chin and alternate between whose case it is. If it's Lydia's, the story will have a Chinatown connection or send them abroad; Bill's can be anywhere in the U.S. This one is Bill cases and gripping, set in upstate NY. Gripping and page-turning, like all Rozan's books. She is great on detail, both of characters and terrain. One of the pleasures of her writing is the byplay between Bill and Lydia whose clever dialogue is reminiscent of the best 40s films when men and women worked as equals as they flirted and competed.
