Starting from an explanation of the basic principles of statics, normal and shear force, bending moments and torsion, it goes on to examine the different structures in which consideration of these is paramount; from simple trusses to statically indeterminate beams and frames. Materials' properties are outlined, and all aspects of beam theory are examined in full detail. Virtual work, energy methods and the various different methods of analysing statically indeterminate structures are discussed in two important chapters. Influence lines and structural instability are also featured.
