Supermarine became famous for their Spitfire and earlier race planes, but long before them, they built state of the art seaplanes. The British government was their biggest customer, followed by several airlines. Though they produced many designs, they designed a LOT of types that never made it to the water, due to stiff competition from other seaplane manufacturers and the incompetence of bureaucrats.
Pegram could have relied heavily on tables and other dry presentations we're familiar with, but he tells the story of the people who started and kept Supermarine going. Each new design is an adventure unto itself. The reader becomes emotionally invested in its success and is crestfallen when it dies on the drafting table, assembly floor, or after test flights. But there's no time to mourn, for we're dashed up and brought along on another adventure.
The facts are all there, and accurate, without relying on ginned-up dialogues that were never spoken. Pegram's narratives are so well crafted, flow so well, the reader looks forward to the next Supermarine adventure. If model manufacturer executives read this volume, they'll be calling in their designers to start cutting molds for styrene Supermarine seaplane models, such is the Pegram's infectious enthusiasm for the subject.
