Seller's Description:
Near Fine in Near Fine jacket. Forrest Reid (1875-1947) was a Northern Irish writer, critic, translator, and founding member of the Irish Academy of Letters. Though born into a Protestant family, he was a lifelong skeptic of religion, which he wrote openly about about in his two volumes of autobiography: Apostate (1926) and Private Road (1940). One writer described Reid as 'belonging spiritually to the [ancient] Greeks', whose literature he revelled in, and as a man who instead of any god 'worshipped every organic thing'. This sense of awe at the natural world, a belief in the inherent value of human relationships, and the rich imaginative capacity expressed in his works are consummately humanist. This copy is near fine in gray cloth with gilt titles on the spine. Very slight bumping at the spine ends and darkening on the endpapers where apparently newspaper articles had been laid in are the only issues. The unclipped dust jacket has been well protected in a plastic cover and shows only very slight edge wear. BM25.
