I'd read Garrett Mattingly's other work on Renaissance Diplomacy, and hold him in high regard. He manages almost cinematic descriptions of the pivotal historical events surround the Armada's attempt to invade Britain in 1588. I will confess that the maritime action was sometimes difficult to follow, not be so familiar with nautical terminology, but the book was enjoyable and enlightening. I would not like to read more on Henri III of France, as well as the Duke of Parma.

One of the Classics of History
Of the many books about the reign of Elizabeth I, the one I keep coming back to quote is Mattingly's line, "Like all the great love affairs of history, that between Elizabeth and her subjects remains a mystery." This should indicate the level of insight and wit in this remarkable book. I have reread it many times (this is my third copy) and have always come away with new insights and understanding, as well as admiration for the sheer quality of the prose.
