And what if she grew to be a partner worthy of his legendary talents. In The Beekeeper's Apprentice, Laurie King tells the story of Mary Russell, who in 1914 meets a retired beekeeper on the Sussex Downs. His name is Sherlock Holmes. As someone who had never been interested in Sherlock Holmes stories, I was amazed at how compelling I found "The Beekeeper's Apprentice." His young partner puts a new human face on the great detective, and her intellectual brilliance is tempered by a warmth that makes her the dominant character, without detracting from Holmes. Laurie King is a wonderful writer, and I hope that this series has a long and successful life.
