It abounds in sites of antiquarian and religious interest. Within a few hundred yards of the old church the Fount of Scotland, a large well with crystal clear water, recalls the days when Roman soldiers slaked their thirst after battle. Close at hand are the ruins of a church and hospital, built by the Culdees on land presented to them by Macbeth. The island of St Serf, with its legends of St Kentigern and its records of Prior Andrew Wintoun, was within the bounds of the parish, and was indeed anciently called Insula Petmook. The castle on a larger island had for ten months been Queen Mary's prison, while John Knox had preached and dispensed the Sacrament in a cleft of the hills hard-by. After the Reformation, part of the Portmoak Priory was used for the worship of the Reformed Church; but in 1659 a church and manse were built on the skirts of Bishop's Hill and close to Portmoak village, the largest of four little villages which are included in the parish. It was of these that Ebenezer Erskine took possession in 1703. The church no longer exists, having given place to a better building in 1832. The manse, which is now used as the minister's stable, was in the solid and cramped style of the period, but gave from almost all its windows lovely views of the eastward part of the parish, which is one of the most picturesque in lowland Scotland. During Covenanting days Presbyterianism had been maintained in a stone and turf building at Scotland Well, and the earnest labours of two excellent ministers had, before Ebenezer's induction, brought all the parishioners back to Presbyterianism.
