Although the first third of the novel is a little slow, mostly dealing with Welsh politics in the 12th century, it definitely picks up and turns into an unlikely, but tender, love story. The characterizations of the main characters is excellent, and the depictions of their relationships with each other. Also it is very atmospheric of time and place, and makes life in a Welsh castle of this period come to life. It at times seems overlong when dealing with Welsh political issues, but these do provide a necessary background for the story, I found this to be a fascinating book, and it's love story is one of the best I've read
