I do not know what book the first reviewer was reading, but Bowman is but a few pages. Drydens kids are not mentioned enough to worry about. The title says it all, The Game. Not my games, not games I played in, it is, The Game.
It starts of him learning the game and how he was involved and goes on about his moving up the ranks. But it presents interesting views of the mind sets and psychology of the different characters and personalities that can contribute to making a bad or good team. How fans look at players, how players view other players or executives. The mental and physical challenges of a long season and thoughts that come to him during practices or games.
I think it is a great look and introspection of his thoughts and feeling as he dealt with different feelings, players and situations throughout his growth.
I especially enjoyed the section where big money started to change the players and the game. Well written and thought out are his observations from a celebrities view point and a fans view as well. It gets deeper into his personal thought processes and feelings.
This is not a breakdown of games throughout his career, there are other books for that. This is a well thought out analysis of his life, what playing does and means to him, and the unsure future that awaited him.
I enjoyed his thoughts very much.
It is an inside look at a lot of things.

For Canadiens fans only.
Dryden spends most of this book fawning over Scotty Bowman, and while there are worse people to fawn over, it's a little strange. You hear about his day-to-day life in Montreal, the road trips, the locker rooms...but it just isn't what I expected. There is little talk of actual games he played in, which is fine for most people...but I'm sorry, I just don't care about Dryden's kids and how hard it is to find time for them. Must be real tough with that summer off and not having to get to the rink until 4 pm for games. Anyway, if you're a Canadiens fan, or just love Ken Dryden, you'll love this book. For the average hockey fan, it's an interesting read, but one I won't be picking up again.
