A chair should be exhibited in each of the views given, or in any other to which the diagram would be equally adapted. If the cuts be examined, the diagram may be traced through each; and in some of the chairs, which have crooked or bent legs, the straight lines of the diagram have served as a guide to their required curvature. Chairs in those positions should be drawn from nature in the absence of the master. The following cuts have been constructed on the diagram of "Lesson 53." The illustration of this diagram here follows that of "Lesson 54," because it places the chair in a foreshortened, and therefore in a more difficult position. As with the application of that diagram, this of " Lesson 53 " must be first constructed, and then a chair drawn upon it, taking for the back (the part first drawn) first one and then another side of the nearest square, and framing the seat on the square marked GHCD. In this diagram, the sloping lines of the furthest cube will guide to the formation of the legs of the chairs. In the absence of the master, chairs should be drawn from nature in these positions. The chair in the following cut is drawn on the diagram given on page 80. It is seen foreshortened, with its legs nearest to the spectator. One or other of the squares of the furthest cube being taken for the back of the chair; The square GHCD here again forms the seat, and the sloping lines of the nearest cube decide on the length and inclination of the legs. This one example, which should be drawn on the board, will suffice to show the pupils how thus to avail themselves of the diagram; and they should be required to construct on it during the master's absence--that is, in the interval...
