This is the autobiography of Lenny Mclean, bouncer, brawler, criminal and celebrity. McLean had a talent for hurting people and made a living at it, inside and outside the prize ring. As a life-long criminal and self promoter, one might expect "The Guv'nor" to be less than honest at times. In the stories of his unlicensed boxing career, he never mentions his losses, implying he had never been truly beaten, and his description of his defeat by arch rival Roy Shaw differs strongly from Shaw's recollection. Nonetheless, he was, clearly, a tough and dangerous man. McLean downplays his own villainy, implying that those he damaged always deserved what they got. He makes much of his code of behavior. I'd like to believe him. In some ways, he is strangely likeable, devoted to family and loyal to friends. Still, this is a strange and alluring celebration of violence, well written by McLean and Gerrard.
