Aside from a handful of orchestral works, Hollywood film scores, and the opera Die tote Stadt, the music of Erich Wolfgang Korngold has mostly slipped into obscurity, and this is especially true of his European works. The post-Romantic style that was popular in Vienna in Korngold's youth was all but forgotten when he returned to Europe after World War II, and the dominance of serialism and avant-garde techniques in the 1950s made his music seem outdated. Not until the 1970s did interest in Korngold become widespread again, and such works as his Symphony in F sharp major and the Violin Concerto in D major, as well as his scores for The Sea Hawk, The Adventures of Robin Hood, and Captain Blood, won him a new following. All the same, the Piano Trio in D major, Op. 1 (1909-10), and the Suite for 2 violins, cello, and piano, left hand, Op. 23 (1930), are still seriously neglected, along with the bulk of his music from his teens and twenties.
