If you're a fan of the classic Hollywood musical, this book provides an excellent outline of the genre. I stress the word, "Hollywood", however. There is a very short overview of musicals from other studios (in which British musicals are given only 4 pages -- the same space as the German output), but otherwise the book is strictly Hollywood. There are not that many stills and photographs either, although they are all attractively integrated with the text, not all grouped together at the back, as they are in other books like "Hollywood Movie Musicals". This book is superbly laid out and has many interesting sections, as well as the obligatory reviews of the "50 essentials" that range from "An American in Paris" and "The Band Wagon" through "Footlight Parade" and "The Merry Widow" to "Yolanda and the Thief".
