Americana: For Roosevelt, this was a war he formally and vociferously advocated. When the moment of opportunity arrived on the battlefield, he proved his courage clearly and unequivacably. Yet, the book could have had severe repercussions for Roosevelt, potentially delivering a setback to his poitical career. Clearly unorthodox and quite candid about how the bureaucracy mismanaged the campaign in which Roosevelt was involved, : The Rough Riders" did not set well with the McKinley administration, especially the War Department. The fact the Roosevelt fought in the war may be somewhat surprising; he volunteered for active duty while he held an important position (Assistant Secretary of the Navy) in McKinleys cabinet. He was a family man with an ill wife and six children are home. Despite his active lifestyle, at 39, he was out of shape. Ignoring these rawbacks, he became the driving force behind creating and launching the most famous volunteer force in American history. It also captures, in an unflattering light, common beliefs of the time--the inferiority of people of color, the inability of "colored troops" to produce effective leaders, and the superiority of Anglo-Saxon society in general and the Protestant heritage specifically. Roosevelt s racial comments are manifestations of the era s narrow lens of inclusion. Part of Lakeside Classics series. AB57
