no dig
ruth stout is determined, probably stubborn, yet liberal in her outlook....if you want to do it- do it! she says "I don't do anything I don't want to do, unless I have to...but I don't have to!"
throughout she stresses that "this is the way I do it" rather than this is the only way, or one should do it this way
quite witty and freely expressed
and useful

An Oldie but a Goodie
Ruth Stout mulched her entire garden with slabs of hay and never dug her garden again...AND it WORKED. Whenever a weed peeks thru you throw down another leaf of hay. Our garden last summer, a la Ruth Stout, was the "size of France"...well, OK, maybe not THAT big, but close! We put down 200 bales of hay (even between rows) so that you saw nothing but hay and plants...it was the single most fantastic garden we EVER had, and we've been at it for years. Never once watered the garden either. Just one of our potatoes fed 4 people for supper. This year, we just have to part the hay, plant whatever, and keep adding leaves when needed...best soil we've ever had as the mulch hay does its work...Love Ruth Stout!

I used Ruth's method of gardening for many years and had huge produce and a huge harvest without using any herbicides, pesticides, or fertilizers. I was a city girl who never worked in a garden before.
