How the decisions of those ahead of the government can change one's fortunes unfolds. Also the military campaigns' impact on people's lives are woven throughout the series. History can not be told without following commerce and money--for better or worst.
When young, who one chooses or rejects for marriage and or what occupation is chosen all determines the path taken; the consequences unforeseen. I do the books an injustice not to mention the richness of the secondary characters. Luscious, luscious storytelling.

Ross Poldark series
This series of books is fabulous historical fiction. The books are hard to find (thank goodness for Alibris!) but I have read that a TV series is planned (one was done on PBS in the 70's) and hopefully the books will be republished.
