Great book - readable, cover to cover. Fairly up to date survey of everything linguistic. Sometimes these types of books can be dry and hard to continue, but this one held my interest al lthe way through.

Great overview
This is a great easy-to-read overall view of language. It includes theories on how language came about, with some great lines, and also acquisition and teaching theories, with exercises.
