This book is out of print, and I don't understand why. Maybe Shirley Jackson was just a little bit ahead of her time.
This story follows a group of "one percent"-ers who shut themselves up in a mansion on a walled estate, believing that the world is going to end and that they alone will be spared.
Told with a sense of humor and with memorable characters, there's something for everyone in this tale that combines elements of the supernatural with zany characters, perhaps a murder or two, and a serious theme that supports the whole crazy edifice.

Intriguing Intellectual Puzzle
This book is an intriguing intellectual puzzle. In our lives we are faced with Time and Predestination and all those metaphysical vagaries as challenges to our perception. Shirley Jackson's insight into human nature has given us a sublime human comdedy whose nuances and implications I am still exploring.
