The Texans is one of twenty-seven volumes in the popular Time-Life book series The Old West. In this volume we learn about the major people and events of Texas history from around 1820 to the death of Sam Houston in 1863. The major historical figures of this book include Stephen Austin, Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, William Travis, Juan Seguin, James Fannin, and Susannah Dickerson. A large portion of the book is devoted to Sam Houston, who served both as president of the Republic of Texas and as the governor of the state. The book also gives an account of the battles at the Alamo and San Jacinto. Other topics covered include the Old Three Hundred, the Texas Rangers, and the beginnings of the cattle industry. Finally, the many contemporary illustrations and photographs make for an authentic book about the early history of the Lone Star State, its people, and its role in the American West.
