From what I've been able to make out, this may be as close to autobiography as R.F. Delderfield ever went. I had the feeling throughout that there was alot of the author in the character Esme Frasier. Read it and you may draw the same conclusion. This book was a popular pair of paperbacks in the 1970's, THE DREAMING SUBURB and THE AVENUE GOES TO WAR. It's a wonderful, endearing look at everyday people--all of whom live in a suburban neighborhood.
