Dave Santell, trail boss, controls his cowboys much like Gil Favor took charge of his on the old tv show, Rawhide. He was the boss, and the men did everything they could to please him; for if the didn't they felt they had let him down. Too bad there aren't more bosses like him today--the kind you lead by example, not asking the worker to do something he himself would not do. The story of the trail driving days has been told several times before in books and movies, but no one has done it better than Peter Dawson with this book. It is all there--the hazards of the trail, the rustlers, the stampedes, and the US marshal with the cavalry behind him to capture Santell when something is blamed on him causing him to run. But there was a stopping place coming, somewhere, somehow, sometime; but until then Santell would run until he could fight back.
