This is good
Set way before the 15th century where the Highland series are set and all the stories of the murrays, camerons, etc are told. This is at the at the time of William the Conquerer. The plot was straightforward in the story telling about invasion and the successful, new king offering the land to the knights who aided in his rise to the throne. During the invasion, Drogo fights to aid his king in his cause and also to gain lands for himself that he cannot get in France (his place of birth) due to his status as 3rd born son in a family. During the invasion's initial days, he lands at Pevensey and finds a hiding Eada. Taking her as a "prisoner" to keep her and to protect her, he marches on to the takeover battle between the intended king and the current, presiding king. Along the way, it is destined they will fall in love. It has been foretold by a "seer". The story has some good twists and interesting by products in the characters. Not only is there a secrect about the gal to be found out much later, but the hero also has enemies that secretly plot his demise in any way possible. There is a great couple in the two slaves along for the ride and one is happy their story is told as well. Even later in the book, the heroine's mother is found to have a secret related to her past and also to her daughter (the heroine). All told fully, making the book interesting to read and not hard to "see" while reading. I recommend this book by Howell and it whet my reading interest for many of the others I read right after. I became leery after reading the first 5 and doing the reviews, as some were not that great - but this one has merit as a good read at least once and possible another look for those who enjoy period pieces.
