Basically a blog about living in Boulder, these short essays cover a wide range of topics from yet another trust-funder transplant permanently recreating in the West. I found some of the essays to be pedestrian and others mundane (is there anything so tedious as a writer justifying his own writing) but several, however, contained keen observations and original thought. I particularly enjoyed his essays on mountain biking (Getting Up the Hill), on the physical foundation of happiness (Abbey?s Country) and history of masculinity in American (The Romance of the Masculine).
Mr. Gessner?s no extreme athlete and his adventures are quite tame. His redemption, however, is that he?s introspective and well read. Though he may be an East Coast, over- educated , navel-gazing member of the privileged class, so too was that other bloggist from Walden pond.
