In this collection Gore Vidal addresses a wide range of topics: writers and politicians, the CIA and the American Empire, Mark Twain and George Washington, Franklin Roosevelt and Edmund Wilson. There are literary essays on Sinclair Lewis and Dawn Powell, and political pieces on America's ambivalent attitude to the UN, the disunity of the United States, and the issue of race as the global village disintegrates into fragments of uncertain national identity. Vidal's barbed pen is unsparing of reputation, whether in a savage assault on John Updike or an acidly humorous commentary on Bill Clinton. The book concludes with a claim regarding the extent of US military involvement in the British Isles.

Seller's Description:
Fine in Fine jacket. London: Andre Deutsch, 1997. First British edition, first printing. Full burgundy cloth with gilt spine lettering. Fine in a fine dust jacket. A clean, tight copy with no defects. Price (£17.99) intact on the front flap. Octavo (8vo), 245 pages. Vidal's ninth collection of essays, gathering his sharp and wide-ranging commentary on subjects from George Washington to the CIA, from Mark Twain to Bill Clinton. Gore Vidal (1925-2012) was an American novelist, essayist, and public intellectual, known for works such as "Burr, " "Lincoln, " and "Myra Breckinridge, " as well as his acerbic political and cultural criticism. The book was published only in the U.K. by Andre Deutsch in 1997. In the U.S., most of the essays from this period were later collected and republished in Gore's omnibus essay volumes such as "United States: Essays 1952-1992" (1993) and "The Last Empire: Essays 1992-2000" (2001), but "Virgin Islands" itself was not issued by an American publisher as a stand-alone volume. The Andre Deutsch edition is the only true first edition.
