This means, in varying proportions among the different ensembles represented in this box, blistering (or excruciatingly slow) tempos, violent instrumental attacks, big dynamic contrasts, attempts to push the solo instruments (always historically appropriate ones, which helps) to their technical extremes, and generally a large dose of sheer dramatic attitude.
