But one day disaster strikes - the cat spills the milk, and Walter is forced to serve the Duke and Duchess rolls made with water. Disgusted by the horrible taste the Duke summons Walter to the castle and threatens to banish him unless the baker can take the same dough and make a good-tasting roll that the rising sun can shine through three times. Why had I never heard of this Eric Carle classic before now? Best known for The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?, Eric Carle's fanciful story of how the pretzel was accidentally invented is not to be missed by his fans. With warm, bright collage illustrations, this story has none of the repetitive rhythms of his stories for younger children, but my kids loved it just the same. Actually, it inspired us to make some pretzels of our own! Why it is not better known is a mystery to me, but it's a winner.
