The Soul of a Man
I read this book several years ago and it changed my life. Well, actually, it changed how I thought about myself - which changed my life. If you have ever been plagued with thoughts of inadequacy, of not "measuring up" as a man - this book is for you. Men and woman, in our society, are subjected to an unending barrage of images and examples of how we "should" look and live. Media in general tells us what "success" looks like, what is "attractive", what is "ugly," what your house "should" look like, what car you "should" drive and on and on and on.
The problem is that none of us can meet these standards. NONE. To this reality we react in a few different ways - (1) we beat ourselves up with the belief that "everyone" else is doing it all and that we just suck, or (2) we kill ourselves in the pursuit of perfection - working endlessly and tirelessly to look like the cover of the magazine or have the best yard in the neighborhood, or (3) we realize that none of the images being projected upon us are real, that perfection is not possible and we accept ourselves - and others - as we/they are - as God made us/them.
This is very Un - American. We are all about the endless pursuit of "better." More, bigger, faster, stronger, prettier, flashier, newer, hipper, etc., this is the yoke we have tied around our own necks. To what end? Sadly, the result will be more of the same, for our children and us.
Men need to be allowed to be men. We live in an overly feminized culture; that has worked tirelessly within our schools and churches to emasculate manhood - to clean us up and correct until we fit into a nice little box. We need to fight, chase, love, compete, defend and save those we love and protect. Anything else leaves us sterile, bored, and lost.
John Eldridge explains these needs and how we can view our lives - our normal lives of work and soccer coaching - as an adventure. How we can see our daily struggles as a battle and the forces working against as a foe to be slayed. And, most importantly, how we can once again see our wives as the princesses they are - to be loved, protected and nurtured for life.
Wild at Heart gives you the understanding that leads to having permission to drop all the "should of" and "wish I had" lamentations in your life. You, today, are the man, father, son and husband that God made you to be. It is your responsibility to embrace that reality and fulfill your duties to the best of your ability. With prayer and the support of others, you can be the man God intended. I no longer look at other men with envy, intimidation or judgment. I am in the place God intended and he has a purpose for me. I rise each day with prayer and the word - and get ready for battle. Read Wild at Heart and learn how you can do the same.

Men! You can be who you were created to be!
This book is amazing. Men are often trained by our society to squelch their God-given mandate to be manly. They were created to be leaders. This book gives some incredible information for men to be who they desire to be. It has captivated the men in our family and even the women found it to be a wonderful truth for them as well. Men you have to read this.
