When an ancient plague is released on modern humanity, Jeff Long is off and running through a dizzing array of worldwide locales and countless characters. Rogue archeologists, eccentric millionaires, neanderthal toddlers, half frog-half men, a cloned messiah, mad scientists--these are just some of the characters and plot lines the book presents in frantic earnestness.
There's much to nitpick here. The plot jumps and swerves and often times leads us into maddening dead ends. Credulity is often strained to the breaking point. Still, despite its faults, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the ride. Like the great pulp writers, Long's exuberance and love of the adventure carries the day. If you love apocalyptic end-of-the-world novels (and you know you do), you'll like this one.
