Instead, a handful of Intermezzi and Capriccios appears with a number of shorter works without opus numbers, including several of the Hungarian Dances, and studies of pieces by Christoph Willibald Gluck, Frédéric Chopin, Carl Maria von Weber, and Johann Sebastian Bach. While Douglas' programming in other volumes gave the feeling of a 19th century recital by combining the sonatas and the sets of variations with miniatures, this volume resembles an appendix, bringing together the odds and ends that don't fit easily into the general scheme. The practical effect of this plan is that collectors of the full series can have everything Brahms wrote, but casual listeners might not recognize much on this disc.
