Owl wants to become a medicine man, and is accepted by "white Buffalo" as his apprentice. Although hunting the buffalo has become much easier with the advent of the elk-dogs (horses) Owl must learn the old ways of hunting, and must learn to get "inside" the head of the buffalo and know what the buffalo is thinking. He must put on a calf skin, and be able to mingle in the herd of buffalo without disturbing them. He must learn when to burn the grass to bring back the buffalo. Owl is now 16, has completed four years of his apprenticeship and now must go on his vision quest. He is captured by the head-splitters while on his quest and kept as a slave. The people finally decide Owl is dead, and another young man, TwoDogs, a bully and not well liked, decides he wants to become a medicine man and forces the old man White Buffalo to take him as the new apprentice. Owl finally excapes from the head-splitters and returns home only to find White Buffalo has died, and TwoDog is the medicine man. This is the story of how the conflict between these two medicine men is resolved.
